Irish Distillers, producers of some of the world’s best known and most successful Irish whiskies, today announced that it will invest €250 million in the construction of a new distillery in Midleton Co. Cork to meet demand and to ensure the future production capacity needed for its portfolio of Irish whiskeys around the world.
The distillery will produce some of the best known and most successful Irish whiskeys in the world including Jameson, Powers, Redbreast, Midleton Very Rare, Spot Family and Method and Madness.
The new distillery will be located on a 55-acre site adjacent to and connected to the famous Midleton Distillery.
Subject to a successful planning application and all licensing requirements being met, the new distillery will distill pot still and grain whiskey with grain tapping, mashing, fermentation and distillation facilities integrated into the new 55 acre site.
The new distillery is expected to generate up to 100 new highly skilled jobs for the region over time once the distillery is operational in 2025, and approximately 800 jobs during the construction phase.
Irish Distillers recently announced plans to invest €50 million to fund projects to transform Midleton Distillery into a carbon neutral operation by the end of 2026 by leveraging breakthrough emissions reduction technology to reduce energy consumption. In line with Irish Distillers’ ambition, the new distillery will also be a carbon neutral operation.
The new site will also incorporate various environmental projects that will be developed to improve biodiversity and protect local wildlife.
Increased distillation capacity is expected to increase Midleton Distillery’s barley and malted barley requirements by up to 50%, which the company intends to source from Irish farmers.
The Irish Distillers project team partnered with engineering and architectural consultancy firm Arup for the initial design and Harry Walsh Associates for the planning application. Irish Distillers engages with all relevant stakeholders and consults with local community groups as part of the pre-planning process.
A planning application is expected to be submitted to Cork County Council towards the end of 2022 and, if successful, construction will begin in 2023 with plans for the distillery to be operational in 2025.

The distillery will also use innovative Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) technology which will see a closed-loop system capture, compress and recycle heat lost in the distillation process. Renewable energy sources, including green hydrogen and biogas, will be used to power the distillery. Irish Distillers has teamed up with local EI-H2 experts to explore opportunities for sourcing green hydrogen and has conducted extensive research in partnership with MaREI, the IFC Research Center for Energy, Climate and the Sea, hosted by University College Cork, to determine the biomethane potential of distillation by-products and design the anaerobic digestion process required to produce biogas. Irish Distillers will also partner with StanTech for wastewater treatment and biogas production.
In addition to its commitments to eliminate Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions at both distilleries, Irish Distillers is also committed to working with suppliers on projects and initiatives to reduce Scope 3 emissions across all the areas of its activity, including raw materials, dry goods, transport, logistics and freight.
